At the southern end of the long stretch of Sunny Beach lies Nessebar, a mostly residential area with it's own share of local shops, bars and restaurants affording a greater opportunity to sample contemporary Bulgaria life with the locals. Beyond this lies "Old" Nessebar, one of the oldest towns in Europe, the origins of which can be traced back to the ancient Thracian settlement of Mesambia founded in the 2nd century. Sitting on it's own small rocky peninsula, the old walled town is almost labyrinthine with a selection of small shops, bars and restaurants at virtually every turn of it's cobbled streets. Typical Bulgaria dishes fill the menus here and fish is the main speciality either in the small harbour area or in the restaurants perched on the upper part of the town, most with great views over the old fishing port and lighthouse.
