Val Thorens, boasting the highest altitude in France’s amazing Trois Vallees, is one of the snow surest resorts you can visit. Sitting at a height of 2230m, it’s hardly surprising that it enjoys an extensive ski season and is a popular haunt with skiers the world over. And, being a purpose built resort allows for plenty of doorstep skiing too!
Beginners on their first Val Thorens ski holiday will find lots of wide open, easy slopes on which to practice. The more experienced skier will enjoy hurtling down the reds around Funitel, Grand Fond, Boismint or the Peclet glacier. The Three Valleys circuit opens up numerous opportunities and, surprisingly, considering its popularity, with very little in terms of lift-queuing. The Glaciers of Peclet and Chavière, the mogul run on the Cîme de Caron black run, and the Couloirs of Courchevel are certainly not for the faint hearted!
Val Thorens is a snowboarder’s dream, with terrain to suit every style and it doesn’t matter what level you’re at. Check out the Boardercross course, or the board park near the Funitel lift. If you’re only starting out, you’ll be well looked after on the slopes in the village.
Come evening, skiers generally congregate in the resort’s bars and cafés. Nightowls though won’t be disappointed, as they can dance the night away at one of the local clubs. And foodies skiing in Val Thorens, prepare yourselves; as there’s a staggering choice of restaurants.
Off piste activities include ice driving, parapenting, snowshoe walking and skidoo and toboggan running. The resort also boasts a sports centre, so for a change, you can have a game of tennis or go for a swim.
With something for everyone and all skiing and boarding styles catered for, Val Thorens should be on every skiers list of places to visit.
