Plakias is a small fishing village on the south coast of Crete that is becoming very popular with those looking for a quiet and traditional Cretan holiday.
The small village is built around the small cove of Plakias and has a secluded and remote feel. The main hub of the resort is the main street which runs parallel to the sandy beach. Though the resort is quite small, the beach is sprawling and plays host to sunbathers, swimmers and snorkellers.
Relaxed restaurants and tavernas lie on the beachside, a lovely setting for an evening meal. Holidays in Plakias are not for those in search of unlimited nightlife, but there are a handful of bars and nightclubs.
There is plenty to do and see in the Plakias area, including hiking among the nature trails, boat trips from the harbour to surrounding islands and bird watching. Further excursions could include the Samaria National Park with the longest gorge in Europe, or Chania town with its churches, castles and vibrant atmosphere.
