Symi is one of the smallest of the Greek Islands and is easily reached by ferry from Rhodes. It is in fact closer to Turkey than it is to Rhodes, but it retains a distinct Greek flavour.
Its main town is where much of the action will take place on a Symi holiday. The town can be separated into two definitive parts. First, there is the harbour area – this can become overcrowded with day-trippers from other islands during the day. Savvy holidaymakers will wait until the influx of sightseers has dispersed before taking to this part of the island.
Resting upon a hill, over the harbour, is a charming village. Its winding streets are brimming with rustic charm. Sun-worshippers can use the narrow lane leading from the village to the small beach.
Symi is known to have a particularly hot climate – holidays here do not involve much else other than basking in the sun by day and relaxing in the modest tavernas by night.
