Turkey's Mediterranean coast is protected by the vast Taurus mountain range which stretches almost its entire length. Alanya is located on a small rocky peninsula where the mountains come closest to the sea. Like many coastal resorts, Alanya has developed in linear style stretching a considerable distance from west to east along the two excellent beaches at either side of the old town. In its distant history Alanya was actually an island just off the coast but due to natural alterations to the shoreline it is now very firmly part of the mainland.
